:: Basic Bong Dynamics          Print

This is a simple explanation of how a bong works. With this knowledge you can go on to create many creative bongs of your own without having to follow the stereotypical shapes or procedures for making a bong.

Above you can see a basic water bong. The white lines show the flow of smoke when its being used. The smoke goes down the down pipe, through the water and up into your lungs.

To make your own bong you just need to follow these simple principles to start off with, ideally the smoke needs to go through a down pipe which can be a metal tube hose pipe etc and through some water. The water cools down the smoke and gives a smoother smoke. Cooling down the smoke in bongs is a worthwhile thing to do, it can really make a difference to your smoking experience. Ice chambers are good for this. If you can add a chamber, for example connecting a bottle to the side of a basic bong and filling it with ice, and then seal off the appropriate holes so that the smoke travels through this chamber before entering your lungs then you should find it will give a smoother smoke.

Adding chambers is a fun way to be creative with bongs, you can add as many as you like as long as there all air tight, you can fill some with water, some with ice, or even just have empty chambers. The result can be an intricate looking creation of your own to show off to your mates.

There are other ways to be creative with bongs though, for example I find piggy banks to be very versatile and you can often create a great little novelty bong with them (see ceramic bong tutorial). Weird pottery and vases can also be used. With enough creativity its possible to turn most objects into bongs.
